UpdatesPlugin no longer supports REST API

The UpdatesPlugin used to include support for a REST request to get the list of outdated plugins, but although it is still mentioned on the plugin's foswiki page, this functionality seems to have been removed in version 2.0. I have a cron job that was using this functionality to generate email when plugin updates are available. Was the omission of the interface during the rewrite intentional, and is there an alternative method I might use to programmatically get the plugin status?
