We still have 1.0 format topics in distribution

This causes the compatibility code to kick in for no good reason.

And while at it - also replacing the tabs by spaces where html or javascript is embedded in the topics. The use of TABs may be acceptable in these cases if it was not for the use of a mix of spaces and tabs making the indentation depending on how many positions your editor thinks a tab is. This varies.

A lot of extensions are affected but the tab to spaces and change to 1.1 format does not justify upreving and rereleasing extensions or even mentioning it in the change history. The default plugins are just in 1.1 format at next 1.0.5 release.
