This is not just for WYSIWYG, but generally for the edit pane.
AJAX provides the facility to background save - this would be a boon for twiki as it would save the possibility of losing work if the browser crashes or is inadvertently closed.
Confluence has this feature.

The TinyMCE autosave plugin actually seems to work quite well, if you are using a modern browser. Some minor tweaks to handle multiple edited topics simultaneously; note to self: investigate draft expirations, default expiration time

There is an issue that, upon restoring an edit session where a draft exists (eg. from prior browser crash), the autosave plugin will update the draft with whatever happens to be in the editor after the first
TINYMCEPLUGIN_AUTOSAVE_INTERVAL
has elapsed.
This can be resolved with a more advanced extension or possible introduction of speednet's full version of the plugin (moxiecode's version in the distribution is stripped down). There are a couple of minor UI problems to consider; this can be carried out in another task.
