are we also looking to have USA 501(c)(3?) nonprofit status?

http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p557.pdf and http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1023.pdf seem to be the paperwork required.

Why? We are a German association. We apply in Germany because Foswiki e.V is legally registered in Germany.

Those non-profit-stati have two components: First, we dont have to pay normal taxes (this is only relevant in Germany at the moment). And seond, donations made to the associtation can reduce the donators tax. The association can write donation receipts.

Non profit status approved on 11 Mar 2011 (see attachments at TaxReduction). Approval is priliminarily until our first tax audit.

Status granted from 01 Jan 2011 till 30 Jun 2012.
